    Introducing EMROD

Since the industrial revolution, energy has been transmitted physically either as molecules through pipes and tankers or as electrons through wires. Unshackling the physical connection between electricity generation and consumption can achieve a breakthrough in the energy industry similar to what wireless communications have done for the transfer of information.

EMROD is researching, developing, and implementing cutting-edge long-range wireless power transfer technology. They have developed a proprietary system for safely sending large amounts of power over long distances using microwave energy - also known as power-beaming. Their technology has the potential to revolutionise power grids globally, connect locations that were previously impossible to reach, and provide power on the go.

    Who are EMROD

EMROD was first incorporated as a company in 2019, following a feasibility study to research and confirm the economic and technological viability of long-range wireless power.

Greg Kushnir, the visionary behind EMROD, was motivated to pursue the development of this technology after recognising the immense environmental and economic benefits of wireless power transfer and, after extensive research, realising that the key components of the technology had progressed to a stage where such a system could be possible and commercially viable.

The now nine strong team, based in Auckland, has successfully demonstrated protypes with partners the European Space Agency, Airbus, Powerco and Ara Ake, and with the Brazilian government.

Their long-term goal is the development of a space-based wireless power transmission system, the Worldwide Energy Matrix (WEM). This network's chief goal is to deliver surplus energy from regions flush with renewable resources but low local demand, to areas with high demand that exceeds local generation capacity.

    Benefits to the innovation ecosystem

EMROD’s novel “power beaming” technology has the potential to create a number of new in-country capabilities. As they continue to develop and commercialise, further knowledge and facilities will be created around microwave engineering, antenna design, beam-forming, semiconductor design, and heat management. The opportunity is for New Zealand to become the world’s leading hub for long-range wireless transmission technology.

Their technology has captured the attention of scientists and engineers globally, who had only previously dreamed of wireless power transmission. This not only creates overseas opportunities but has also led to huge interest in international talent joining the organisation.

Central to EMROD’s expansion and growth is the exchange of knowledge with other innovators and organisations. They already have an impressive list of partners that they’re working with and have a long list of others that are keen to meet. They’re especially active with other innovators New Zealand, including Astrix Astronautics and Ara Ake, and are playing an active part in driving forward a more networked ecosystem.

What the panel had to say about EMROD:

EMROD delivered a humble, authentic and honest presentation, which clearly demonstrated a strong and dedicated team.

All aspects of their application were of a high calibre, and we were impressed by the level of detail and the support shown by a broad range of impressive partners.

EMROD’s technology has the potential to impact the lives of every person on the planet – it’s inspiring to see their developments being made right here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

How EMROD will be investing their grant

Following successful prototype demonstrations, the organisation is now preparing to develop a production-ready system and supply chain. This includes setting up their next-stage facility and completing demonstration models for sales purposes.

Alongside the manufacturing preparation, they’ll also be investing in building commercial teams, creating marketing and communications plans, completing regulatory pathways and enhancing IP protection.

“We’re thrilled to receive an Ārohia Trailblazer Grant, recognising EMROD as an innovation leader. This funding fuels pivotal demo projects, propels our journey to commercial success, supports team growth, and drives the productisation of our technology—boosting New Zealand’s standing as a global leader in wireless power innovation.
