As you may be aware Callaghan Innovation is currently being disestablished.

What's in this article

We recognise there has been some uncertainty about what this means for the products and services transferring to MBIE or a Public Research Organisation (PRO). To clarify, the functions listed below will continue to operate as usual, ensuring uninterrupted support and service from Callaghan Innovation until they are fully transferred.

    Transferring to MBIE

    Funding and grants services:

    Other services:

These products will continue to be funded by MBIE beyond the disestablishment of Callaghan Innovation, and customers should engage with our teams as usual. We are still processing, assessing, and approving applications. If you are considering applying or have questions, please reach out to your usual contact – our teams remain fully operational.

Transferring to a Public Research Organisation (PRO)

    • Biotechnologies Group: Funding has been extended until 30 June 2027. Once the new BioEconomy PRO is established, the intention is for the Biotechnologies Group to move there. In the meantime, it remains part of Callaghan Innovation and will continue to sign new contracts and deliver its full suite of services to existing and new customers.

    • The Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL): MSL is likely to transfer to the new earth sciences-focused Primary Research Organisation (PRO), which will be formed through the merger of NIWA and GNS Science. Until then, MSL will continue to operate as usual.

    • The Bioresource Processing Alliance (BPA), Food Innovation Network (FIN) and New Zealand Product Accelerator (NZPA) will transfer to the most relevant PRO. MBIE is working with the Crown Research Institutes on merger proposals.

    Other services and next steps

    • Funding for Applied Technology services has been extended until 30 September 2025, rather than ending on 30 June. This allows for a smoother transition as activities and contracts wind down. However, this is a one-off extension, and funding will not continue beyond this date. We are no longer accepting new customers or contracts.
    • For products and services not mentioned above, we are actively working to finalise the details and will keep customers informed as more information becomes available.

We hope this provides clarity and reassurance about the products and services that will continue to be offered. If you need any support or have specific concerns, please contact your Callaghan Innovation representative, or complete our contact form here
